Commissioning a Portrait

I only work from photographs for all my commissioned work, not just in creating a work of art from your favourite holiday view, but also for house portraits and particularly for pet and people portraits.

Where possible I like to take my own photographs, as this gives me the opportunity to get to know the subject in person, be it pet or property and I take lots of photos from different angles and of details.

However, for various reasons, it is not always possible to take my own photographs and must work from client’s own photographs, for example when distance prohibits or the portrait is for a surprise present or if it is required posthumously. And of course, you may have a favourite photo you want me to work from.

I can only guarantee to capture the character of the subject, if the photos I am sent are good quality and as clear as possible. I need several photos to work from, even if one is a favourite and is the one you wish me to base the portrait on, as others may contain important information, such as details and colour of the eyes. (Please click on Photographing tips, for some useful advice) The better the photo - the better the portrait.

When sending emailed photos, send just a few images at a time so that the attachment is not overloaded and therefore I may not receive it.
If sending photos by post (ideally a minimum size of 7” x 5”), please make sure you have copies, as I cannot be responsible for them being lost in the post.

Once I have viewed the photos and determined that they are of sufficient quality for me to accept the commission, I will contact you either by email or by phone, to discuss your portrait requirements in greater detail.

PRICES

Prices are based on various factors, such as the size of picture, number of subjects, medium and the amount of detail. In the case of House portraits, prices will vary depending on the type of property and the amount of detail in the building and surroundings.

HOW I WORK:

I work on a “first come first serve” basis and require a deposit of 50% (non refundable) and this books you into my schedule. The waiting list can vary depending on the time of year, (particularly approaching Christmas) so it is best to plan your portrait well in advance.

Firstly I produce a pencil outline drawing to show the composition and when this has been approved I will start the final artwork.

When the commission is ready I will send you a photograph of the finished piece and the balance, (70%) must be paid before the work is despatched, or on collection. P&P will be charged at cost.

Portraits in gouache and coloured pencil on watercolour paper will be presented in card window mount and cellophane wrap.
